How important is strength training during race season
We get it, racing has arrived! Many of us just want to do our sport, but it is crucial to keep up your strength training throughout your season for many reasons. Strength training in season is crucial for injury prevention. It is a critical tool for maintaining and increasing your power during race season, not to mention improved efficiency. Strength training is also important for tendon strength and long term bone health, especially for endurance athletes.
The science points to 2-3 workouts a week being the most effective. There is no need to reinvent the wheel, keep your workouts simple and focused. It is critical that you include 1 full rest day per week (a strength day is not a rest day). Athletes should avoid inconsistent training or overcomplicated workouts. There is no need to do body-part specific training unless you are rehabbing an injury. Most important, never skip your rest days.
We are training for life long resiliency in addition to our specific sport. Do your best to make strength training a year round habit and not just a winter chore. Consistent year round training will help you continue to thrive at your sport into your 50s, 60s, and beyond!
